Fiery mambo rhythms bounced off the buildings along Monroe Street in downtown Phoenix on Friday, March 7, as pulsing electopop came streaming out of the Hotel San Carlos and gritty garage punk came issuing out of a side alley.
Such was the scene at the first Viva PHX music festival, a sprawling fest that featured 70 national and local bands spread across 14 downtown venues. Modeled after the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, the sold-out Viva PHX was designed to be overwhelming, allowing attendees the chance to duck into a place and hear a rising indie act on their way to check out a marquee name on the main stages.
